I was cruising around "the web" not looking for anything in particular and stumbled upon an archived web article showing a multi-layer approach to rendering skin tones with SSS shaders. I have to confess I'm not sure I follow all the logic used in creating this shader but I've adapted it to my own work and here is a sample:
In addition to the SSS node work I have the combination of a Vornoi and Nose node that are used to create a bump map to emulate skin pores. Node setup is here:
I'd place the SSS nodes here but they take up much too much room on the screen to get in one view.
