I've read the FAQ but doing think this is covered.

What I want to do:

* Create a model with the right hair, facial expressions, etc.
* From the command line, export that model as OBJ to various poses (the poses defined in the UI).

Basically, I'd like to get a set of models in various poses.

I'm not sure if there is a generic scripting interface like this. It seems the Python API is for plugins, no?

You can do this kind of thing with Utilities > Scripting panel in the GUI. The script can be run with utilities > execute. This is only a crude implementation with minimal documentation, but maybe you can make it work for your needs.
