Did you remove this in later version(s)?
I'm using 0.27 and there is a distinct lack any finalize options.
Can't rigify an already rigified rig, so that's out of the question.

Yes, I think I removed it at some stage. It turned out that the finalization code was very brittle. Many changes to the metarig, especially in the middle of the skeleton (e.g. the spine, hip or shoulder areas) simply caused a crash. It was more safe to add bones to the periphery, like the horns in a previous post, but such bones could just as well be added to the final, rigified armature.
